Geltsdale (NY5653) – a Site of Special Scientific Interest – is home to several hundred veteran trees including alders.

Recently the woodlands with hundreds of veteran trees were recognized as one of the last sizeable examples of upland wood pasture in England (100 ha). It contains a wealth of lichens and bryophytes, and is still reminiscent of the ‘wild wood’. Black grouse, red squirrel and the hen harrier are amongst its rarities.
