The Howk

Howk - to prise or dig (old Norse)

Both the Howk and the name of the stream that runs through it, Cald Beck are words left by the Vikings who lived in the Lake District. The Vikings of the Lakes were never defeated by the Normans and the language flourished, so that many words used by Cumbrians are from our Viking ancestors.

It is not unusual for a friend to say "howk it up!", if you have a particularly bad cough!

There is a website for people who are interested in our "language", the Lake District Dialect Society.
