The Bobbin Mill

The Bobbin mill was built in 1857, and produced bobbins for the cotton industry. The mill was powered by a 42' waterwheel, the largest in Great Britain, and you can see the shaft that housed the wheel, its enormous! The Mill closed in 1924 and fell into disrepair. Over the last 10 years the Mill has been restored, ensuring we remember its importance as a cumbrian industrial site.

The building in the foreground of the picture is the drying shed, used to season the wood for the bobbins.
