This is the ancient church of St Martins

The present building was probably built around the late 1600s. The alter table inside bears a date of 1674.

There has been a church in this place for at least 700 years, although the yew tree in the curch yard is beleived to be 1300 years old. If this is true, it is quiet likely that there has been a place of worship at this site since the 700s - the years when the celts still lived in these valleys.

Significantly the men of Martindale were regarded as excellent Bowmen. Possibly crafting the staves for their bows from the wood of this ancient yew tree.
