Swinside
Stone Circle dates from the Bronze Age. It nestles under the slopes
of Black Combe in the southern lakes. Excavations at the beginning
of the century showed that the stones are bedded in a layer of packed
pebbles. The site is also known as Sunkenkirk from a legend that
the Devil caused the stones, intended for building a church, to
sink at night into the ground |
